Dr. Mike Funyak
PT, DPT, SCS, OCS, CSCS, ACSM-EP
Mike is originally from Pittsburgh, PA, where he grew up playing multiple different sports, but mainly hockey, soccer, and tennis. Being so involved in athletics while growing up, he decided to pursue a career in sports via the performance and health aspects. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Slippery Rock University in 2015, along with certifications as an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist. He then continued to further his education, earning his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 2018.
After graduation, Mike moved to Northville, MI, where he split his time working in a sports medicine clinic and providing first-line care to the Michigan Hawks Soccer Club, effectively functioning as the club’s sports performance coach and rehab coordinator. He also spent time serving as the main physical therapist for the USA Hockey National Development Team in Plymouth, rehabbing players with long-term injuries. During this period, Mike also obtained Board Certification Specialties in Sports and Orthopaedic physical therapy, forgoing a traditional residency program and training/learning via opportunities he sought on his own. After 3 years in Northville, Mike then made the jump to professional sports as the team physical and manual therapist for the Syracuse Crunch, the American Hockey League Affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning, from 2021-2024.
Mike is a passionate therapist who focuses on bridging the gap between rehab and performance, aiming to help patients achieve a higher level of performance after the rehab experience by progressively loading and stressing the system within an individualized periodization framework. When he is not in the gym/clinic, he enjoys spending time and traveling with his wife, Brooke. Otherwise, you will find him in a hockey rink, or on any one of a soccer field, tennis/pickleball court, or golf course!
